The Situation in Chicago

Yesterday's Chicago Tribune had an interesting article on the financial situation at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra: Chicago Symphony Orchestra labor strike reflects deeper financial troubles.

(Note: You have to create a login to get the full story. Annoying, but worthwhile! Which is more than can be said for our hometown paper's cultural coverage...)

  1. That was very interesting, at least some of their debt came from a renovated facility which is something that we desperately need.Seems ridiculous that the ASO pays rent for such a terrible facility. Now, with no hope of the symphony center, yet still having the costs involved with managing the property and taxes seems like a bad investment all the way around.
And if they are worried about attracting talent with their reputation, their higher pay scale and their wonderful conductor that leaves us where...? Oh that's right management doesn't think the recent pay slashing and disrespect will have any bearing...
Also with the talk of contributions to pensions... hmmm wonder who they are doing with that?
