I sent Mr. Lebrecht the link to our blog site ... and received this in reply. It is a shameful fact that local media have not taken up this issue, considering its far-reaching effect. Beverly pointed out that there was a time when the local investigative reporters would be all over this, but frankly, I can't remember back that far.

I just read through another extended thread of discussion about the current state of affairs in the orchestra world, as posited in a book by conductor John Axelrod. It's quite lengthy, but very informative and well worth the time:

Norman Lebrecht has some very interesting articles and lots of information that feeds into this situation.
DeleteI never thought I'd say it, but damn do I miss Pierre Ruhe. He'd have been all over this. Interestingly, the AJC had this footer appended to the end of its most recent story:
ReplyDelete"The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is a major force in the city’s cultural life. Beginning months ago, when the contract negotiations between the symphony and its players were just heating up, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has dug into the organization’s finances and kept readers up to date on the contract talks. Look to us for more unmatched coverage in the days and weeks to come."
Oh really? Interesting... We need to challenge them to provide that. Comment on articles and twitter and facebook and hold them accountable for doing their "watchdog" job!
I'm sure they meant to, Kathleen ... maybe something came up. A Casino Night needed reporting on.
DeleteOooooh I agree!
